Roll up for Waverley's great car space race

29 Sep, 2008 01:19 PM
WHETHER it be from a lack of car parking spaces or a lack of connecting bus services, commuters are feeling the squeeze in Glen Waverley railway station's car park.

Mulgrave resident Jessica Wallace said car parks at the station were full by 6.30am on weekdays. She often parks a 20-minute walk from the station or illegally parks at The Glen shopping centre.

"It's got so that I can't afford to drive to work any more, but no matter how early I get to the station all of the car parks are full.''

In 2006, Scoresby MP Kim Wells proposed a multi-storey car park at the station to fix the parking shortage.

Last week, he said he understood there was land available but not the political will to increase car park spaces.

"The Government spends a lot of time and effort encouraging people to use public transport. It's ridiculous that they don't back up their calls with adequate car parking.''

The Public Transport Users Association's outer-eastern convener Jeremy Lunn said the problem was caused by a lack of adequate feeder buses to get to the railway station.

"People wouldn't be relying on the car parks so much. In a proper system you would walk to the end of your street and catch a bus.

"Buses could also provide services all day, whereas one car park space can only be used by one person for the entire day.''

Connex spokesman John Rees said the system, including car parks, was stretched to near-capacity, but Connex had limited control over what it could do with parking spaces.

He encouraged customers to 'car pool', walk, or use the bus to get to the station.

State Government spokesman Michael Sinclair said the state budget pledged $29.2million for 1700 new parking spaces in the Melbourne network. He did not say whether Glen Waverley station would get funding.

The construction of a railway line to Rowville would assist in easing congestion on the Glen Waverley line. Parking is not just a problem at Glen Waverley, but as far along the line as Holmesglen. One way or another, action needs to be taken to ensure that public transport remains a viable option for people traveling to work.
