A FERTILITY control clinical psychologist has defended Mt Waverley MP and Children's Minister Maxine Morand from attacks by anti-abortion group Tell The Truth Coalition.
Responding to a protest by 30 TTT members at Ms Morand's Glen Waverley office earlier this month, Susie Allanson said she was appalled by the "extreme rhetoric'' of the group's spokeswoman, Tanya O'Brien.
The protest was against State Government plans to decriminalise abortion later this year.
Dr Allanson said her East Melbourne clinic was picketed daily by protesters, including Ms O'Brien.
She said a "vocal minority'' was trying to intimidate Ms Morand and other politicians, despite surveys showing that 80 per cent of Australians were pro-choice.
"They use an extreme way to present a person in a ghastly light.
"The minister has the best interests of women and their families in her sights. Women come into the clinic because they may already have two children, and they know they won't be able to care for them all.''
Dr Allanson said she had become more vocal against anti-abortionists' comments since the murder of a security guard at the clinic in 2001.
"We're not going to be intimidated because we believe in what we're doing.
"The consequences of Tell The Truth are that they make women more distressed, more anxious and impede women from accessing services in a timely manner, which can add to their distress.''
She said illustrations on Tell The Truth Coalition pamphlets focused on images of late-gestation terminations, but 96 per cent of terminations occurred before 12 weeks of pregnancy. Oneper cent of terminations occurred after 20 weeks, mainly prompted by the late detection of foetal abnormality, she said.
"Keeping abortion on the Crimes Act is rooted in the whole thing that women can't be trusted to make decisions about this.
"Women are best placed to understand what's going on in their life and what's best for them. For a distant politician to impose restrictions is blatantly sexist.''
Tell The Truth Coalition didn't respond to the Journal's calls before deadline.
