TRANSPORT needs are not keeping pace with the rate of building development in Monash, says an urban planning expert.
Kevin O'Connor, of the University of Melbourne, will speak on transport woes at a Monash Liveability Coalition forum in Notting Hill next Monday.
Professor O'Connor will be joined by Institute for Sensible Transport director Elliot Fishman, who will speak about sustainable transport options.
Last week, Professor O'Connor told the Journal residential and commercial growth in Monash under the Melbourne 2030 strategy had to be matched by transport improvements.
"Melbourne 2030 has not been strong enough on transport implementation.
"If you're going to provide an extra 100 houses, there has to be a capacity for providing an extra bus."
Labelling Monash's public transport system "rudimentary", he said there had been little recent improvement.
A Glen Waverley resident, Professor O'Connor has observed growing traffic congestion on side streets and arterial roads, and a scarcity of car spaces.
He said the Monash Council should reconsider its insistence on car spaces at new commercial developments and instead encourage shuttle bus services to reduce the number of cars on the roads.
The forum is next Monday, April 7, 7.30-9pm, at Notting Hill Neighbourhood House, 37 Westerfield Drive, Notting Hill.
