A MOUNT Waverley mum's work with children in need has inspired her son to dedicate his life to foster care.
Last Friday, volunteer Lindy Fergeus was recognised with a five-year service award at Anglicare Victoria's inaugural Foster Care Awards ceremony.
Mrs Fergeus began her work in foster care about eight years ago after reading an article about volunteering in a local newspaper.
Since then she has cared for about 28 children. Mrs Fergeus' son Josh was about 15 when she welcomed her first foster child.
Josh, now 23, said it was a "really positive" experience that inspired him to work in the field.
Josh is a research officer for Anglicare Victoria and provides respite foster care for two teenagers.
He has also been a foster care training recruitment officer at Anglicare Victoria.
"Lindy showed me that I could use my skills for the benefit of others. I wouldn't even have known about the job if it wasn't for Lindy's involvement."
Josh said he was never concerned about his position in the family while foster care children lived in his home.
"Lindy made sure we never felt uncomfortable or like we were being replaced."
Mrs Fergeus encouraged residents to take up foster care.
"Foster care is a really enjoyable experience. Some children have complex problems but the greater the challenge, the greater the reward."
