MONASH Council will not follow neighbouring Knox's lead in pushing the State Government to deliver a rail link through Clayton and Mulgrave.
Knox Mayor Joe Cossari, Cr Mick Van de Vreede and chief executive officer Graeme Emonson recently met the new parliamentary secretary for public transport, Brian Tee, to sell their case for Rowville rail, which would have stations at Monash University and on Wellington Road in Mulgrave.
While Knox Council continues to fight for the rail line, Monash Mayor Charlotte Baines said Monash Council believed expanding bus travel was the most expedient way to improve public transport.
But the Public Transport Users Association would like to see Monash Council get behind the push for Rowville rail.
PTUA president Daniel Bowen said the council did not appear to be looking at transport options in the long term.
"Buses are certainly a boost in the short term but users on Wellington Road know they are at capacity and can get stuck in traffic.
"Longer term, a rail line would be the way to fix that."
Monash Council's Eastern Transport Coalition representative, Cr Greg Male, said Monash supported its Knox colleagues on Rowville rail but Monash Council had specific public transport needs it wanted to address.
Cr Baines said Monash would continue to pressure the State Government for better public transport across Melbourne's east.
"The council has been successful in lobbying the State Government in regard to bus services with the introduction of Smart Bus routes throughout Monash."
Mr Tee has previously said he would keep an open mind but believed buses were cheaper and more flexible. "It gives you a lot more flexibility around those areas compared with the cost of rail."
