Memories of brother during special day

09 Nov, 2009 02:24 PM
ON Remembrance Day, former Women's Royal Australian Naval Service staffer Grace Hill will remember her brother George Rohead who was killed in action in Rabaul in 1942.

"That's what the day means to me. George was in his 30s, serving in the infantry in New Guinea. Both my brothers were in the second world war. But Norman, who was in the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion, came back home."

At 83, Mrs Hill, who volunteered to join the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service in 1944, said women weren't sent out to sea in those days.

"I was stationed at the stores' depots. My job was top secret. I was a messenger and I couldn't talk about what I was doing. I used to work shifts and was stationed at Port Melbourne before I was moved to [HMAS] Rushcutter in Sydney in 1944.

"The war affected us. I had to grow up because I was living away from home"

A life member of WRANS Association, Mrs Hill still attends meetings at Legacy House in the city each month.

She will represent the Ex-WRANS Association at a Remembrance Day service in Springvale Cemetery at the Cross of Sacrifice memorial.

Dandenong and Cranbourne RSL welfare officer John Filmer said Remembrance Day reminded us of the ongoing conflicts taking place for more than 100 years, including the Boer War in 1898 and the Great War which started in 1914 and lasted until 1918.

"In 2009 we still have wars but the important thing is we must remember not only the veterans who have fallen but the survivors."

Mr Filmer said he'd like to see many issues addressed that concerned the young personnel serving as peacemakers.

"I want to see more energy put into recognising these young people. I'm seeing a lot of men coming back with big problems that need urgent attention. One is that many are not being debriefed. I feel they are being treated and ignored and their situation is just as bad as the Vietnam veterans' was when they returned home."

Mr Filmer said he would soon make recommendations to the Federal Government on the issue.

The Dandenong Cranbourne RSL sub-branch will hold services for Remembrance Day on Wednesday at the Pillars of Freedom, Clow Street, Dandenong, at 10.30am.

Guest speaker, Greater Dandenong Mayor Pinar Yesil, local politicians, army and navy cadets and pupils from Dandenong High School will attend.

A service will be held on the day at Endeavour War Memorial at Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills.

Casey councillor Shar Balmes will be guest speaker while local schools, the army and navy cadets and members of the Australian Air League will be involved in the ceremony.
