THE State Government's performance in Monash has come under the spotlight after the 10th anniversary of its election.
After the ALP marked 10 years in power on September 18, Liberal member and South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich claimed it had been a "stalled and disappointing" decade for the community.
She said Labor had broken major promises such as saving the AFL football stadium at Waverley Park and had increased the number of poker machines available to Monash, considered a "high risk" area for problem gambling.
But Mt Waverley MP Maxine Morand said Labor was proud of what it had achieved in Monash, including a 'record' investment in health and education.
Mrs Peulich said Mr Brumby's decision not to celebrate his Government's 10th birthday was a wise one given that "too much money had already been wasted" while projects remained stalled, key issues unresolved and services fell short of promises made before Labor won office in 1999.
She said assaults had increased by 33.6per cent in Monash during the past 10 years and over a three-month period this year, 61 patients waited an hour and 52 more than two hours in an ambulance outside Monash Medical Centre. Mrs Peulich said the planning system was "in a mess" with high-rise developments fast-tracked and crammed into inappropriate locations while land at seven Monash schools that were closed or merged by the State Government had lain idle for up to eight years.
"The Monash community should be glad that Mr Brumby did not celebrate his Government's 10th birthday because broken promises and neglect won't be fixed through slick community cabinet visits [or] Labor MPs posing in hard hats for pictures."
However, Ms Morand hit out at claims of broken promises and said Mrs Peulich would "need a map to find Monash".
"She is not local and has no knowledge of local issues. If she leaves her electorate office in Chelsea she might begin to appreciate and see for herself the positive great place that Monash is to live in."
Ms Morand said the last time Liberals were in Government they "took the people of Monash for granted" by cutting 800 police jobs after promising 1000 extra.
"Monash benefited from the 1400 extra police under Labor, with a record $1.9billion budget for Victoria Police this year alone. This has resulted in crime falling by 29.2per cent in Monash, which is greater than the state average.
"The Liberal Opposition do not understand the pressures on working families.
"Labor is creating jobs and making record investment in health services and local schools including Mount Waverley secondary, Ashwood secondary, Wheelers Hill secondary and Glendal and Mount Waverley primary."
