Klisaris seeks Aston seat

28 Sep, 2009 10:25 AM
MONASH Mayor Paul Klisaris has put his hand up for the seat of Aston in Melbourne's east in next year's federal elections.

Cr Klisaris, who said he would not give up his role as a councillor if elected, was nominated for ALP preselection which closed last Friday.

The Labor party will announce its endorsed candidate for Aston - which covers outer eastern suburbs such as Bayswater, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Rowville, Scoresby and Wantirna South - in mid-October.

Cr Klisaris has already experienced a federal election when he ran for Higgins in 2004. On a two-party preferred basis, he received 41.24per cent of the vote against sitting member Peter Costello's 58.76per cent.

Speaking to the Journal last week, Cr Klisaris confirmed he had nominated for preselection for Aston.

Cr Klisaris has worked as a teacher and owns a child care centre. He is serving his second consecutive term as mayor of Monash after he was voted into the council in 2000.

He was voted out of the former Warrigal Ward in 2003 but returned to Monash in 2005 in the Mulgrave Ward. Cr Klisaris said he looked forward to the challenge of pre-selection.

"I expect it won't be easy, but if I'm given the honour of representing Aston I'll give it 100per cent."

He put his hand up for the electorate which does not cover suburbs in Monash or his home in Malvern East because its demographics were similar to Monash, he said.

"My campaign will be a celebration of all the great things the Rudd Government has done for Aston including the fiscal and education stimulus packages, the low interest rates and the growth in our economy.

The mooting of Cr Klisaris as a potential ALP candidate for Aston comes after Alan Tudge won Liberal preselection earlier this month.

Mr Tudge is a former advisor to Brendan Nelson and Alexander Downer.

The seat of Aston will be vacated at the next federal election by sitting member Chris Pearce.

In the 2007 election, Mr Pearce won 55.05per cent of the vote on a two-party preferred basis, with Labor candidate Gerry Raleigh polling 44.95per cent.

Mr Raleigh, who ran for Aston in 2007, and also for Knox Council in 2008, was considering running.

"Yes, I'm looking at. I'll be looking at it over the next few days," Mr Raleigh told the Journal last week.

Cr Klisaris will have to resign from the Monash Council if he thinks he has a chance of being elected to Aston. That's because under the Consitution he'll lose his seat if legally challenged because he holds an office of profit under the Crown, as Councillors are now paid. In the old days it was common for Councillors to be federal MPs. Alan Bird, the late ALP MHR for Batman, was Mayor of Northcote in the 1950s while an MHR. That's because Council service was then honorary. It's not any longer. Remember Phil Cleary, who was booted out as MHR for Wills by the High Court because as a teacher (even as he was a teacher on unpaid leave) he was deemed to be holding an office of profit under the Crown? If you think you have no chance of winning in Aston then don't resign from Monash Council. But if you do win in Aston you'll soon forfeit your federal seat if someone challenges you in the Court of Disputed Returns, which is the High Court. Get legal advice Cr Klisaris before you make silly statements like you'll remain on Council as well as being an MHR. You now cannot.

Cr Klisaris is not quite sure were he lives, he once claimed he live at the child minding centre on Warrigal Road.

He lost the election in Warrigal Ward because we did not want him in Oakleigh Ward.

If elected he will not remain a councilor in Monash. If elected it will be because of community support for the Labor party only. If elected we the ratepayers of Monash will be the winner.

O please go, you are lazy. You promised to write to Hughesdale kindergarten to give special consideration for my request to get my daughter in. Just like all politicians you are full of hot air. I hope at the next election you are left in the cold and without a spot, just like our family. Alison Howe

Klisaris was pre-selected as Labor's candidate for Aston. I bet the Libs are happy.
