A GLEN Waverley principal has called for an urgent review of an intersection she describes as "an accident waiting to happen".
Glenallen School principal Elizabeth Greene said the T-intersection at Waverley Road and Allen Street was particularly dangerous during peak times and the issue could be solved by painting a 'keep clear' zone.
She said it was a daily battle to exit Allen Street, with waits of up to 10 minutes.
"It is dangerous to be doing a right-hand turn from Allen Street into Waverley Road.
"The traffic stops at Springvale and banks right back to Allen Street. Sometimes people leave a gap and most of the time they don't, but even if they do you can't see what's coming from the left."
A 2006 VicRoads survey showed few cars were using the intersection and were not waiting long enough to turn to warrant 'keep clear' markings.
Ms Greene, who has worked at the special school for three years, has called for a review as "near misses have been an ongoing form of conversation between staff for years".
Although most students were transported to and from school by a special bus, at least 80 staff members were using the intersection between 4.30-5.30pm, she said.
VicRoads metropolitan south east acting regional director Duncan Elliott said the criteria for 'keep clear' markings were not met because the delays were not caused by a stationary queue on Waverley Road.
He said VicRoads would contact the school to explore safety options.
