SHE'S been part of a rare species - female football club presidents - but Gail Hewitt is now content with enjoying the game from a less demanding position.
Ms Hewitt is stepping down from her role as president of Mulgrave Football Club after four years at the helm.
Incoming president Warren Lester, of Glen Waverley Rovers, will take over the reins at the Lions' AGM on October 28.
Ms Hewitt is vacating the presidency to seek a decreased workload as she juggles her passion for the club with running her Scoresby bakery.
"I've been president for four years and secretary for three, so it's time for a change. But I certainly haven't lost any passion for the club."
Ms Hewitt believes she's silenced a lot of people who believed she wasn't capable of the position.
"When I first took the role on, a few people looked me down and wondered what I was doing there. But I've certainly proved them wrong and showed that I know quite a bit about football.
"Women can do anything if they put their minds to it."
She lists seeing the club reach multiple division 2 grand finals in 2008 as the highlight of her time in charge.
"It's also been great watching the boys come through. I've certainly seen a bit of talent," she says.
Ms Hewitt plans to stay on as a committee member in 2010 and spend time watching her son Glenn - a 200-game veteran at the club - play in the reserves.
She urges women interested in getting involved at their local sport clubs to give it a shot.
"There are no boundaries. If you're confident enough and can put in the time and effort, go for it because it's very rewarding."
