 Freeway noise 'surges'

Freeway noise 'surges'

29 Sep, 2008 01:16 PM
A 'BUFFER' of trees removed from beside the Monash Freeway has led to "constant'' traffic noise, a resident says.

VicRoads has denied the recent removal of trees, apart from "a limited number of shrubs''.

Notting Hill resident Melinda Ashton, who lives "quite some distance'' from the freeway, said trees were removed near the Ferntree Gully Road overpass as part of the M1 widening project.

"[It shows] trees will go if it means two extra lanes of traffic.

"You would think VicRoads would have considered the impact their removal would have on the noise buffering.

"I noticed the increased traffic noise level about six weeks ago. Now I can go outside any time of the day or night and hear

it.''

A VicRoads spokeswoman said no trees had recently been removed in the area between Blackburn and Springvale roads.

"The M1 project has not removed any trees or unnecessary vegetation on the road verges apart from a limited number of shrubs as necessary to install conduits for the new freeway management system.''
