PEOPLE from non-English-speaking backgrounds can gain skills in child care through a certified course to be launched by the South Eastern Region Migrant Resource Centre next month.
Participants who complete the certificate III in children's services can qualify to become child-care workers and family day carers.
The course, being offered in partnership with Chisholm TAFE, was initiated by Mission Australia - Communities for Children, Greater Dandenong, which is funded by the Federal Government.
The resource centre's employment consultant, Vijaya Sundaramurthy, said there were many employment opportunities in the child-care sector.
"They will have a better understanding about quality care for children and gain knowledge of how to access and influence the Australian child-care system."
Participants will require at least a certificate III in English language skills to complete the course.
The free course is scheduled to start in mid-April and run until December.
It comprises 60 days of classes to be run three days a week, and 30 days in a work placement (to be run five days a week). Classes will be held at the SERMRC offices in Dandenong two days a week, and one day will be at the Dandenong campus of Chisholm TAFE.
Those interested can attend an information session from noon-2pm on April 7 at SERMRC, level 1, 314 Thomas Street, Dandenong.
