PARENTS and teenagers will have the chance to learn about, and shape discussion on, youth alcohol and drug misuse during forums in Monash next month.
The information sessions in Clayton and Ashwood will discuss the latest drug and alcohol use trends, services for young people, and hosting parties.
The sessions will be held by Monash Council, MonashLink community health service, Victoria Police, and Eastern Drug and Alcohol Services.
Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris said the forums would give young people a chance to speak with experts in drugs and alcohol, and youth services. "[It is about] providing access to balanced and accurate information about alcohol and other drugs.''
This month, the Youth Substance Abuse Service in Box Hill reported a steep rise in young people seeking help for alcohol abuse - up from 28 cases in 2003 to 135 in 2007.
An Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report found alcohol-related harm was the leading cause of disease and injury among 16-24-year-olds.
The free forums will be at Ashwood College, July 22, 7-8.30pm, and Clayton Community Centre, July 23, 7pm.
Bookings: Tanya, 9561 7349 or tanyak@monash.vic.gov.au by July 18.
Young people can also have their say on youth binge-drinking in an online survey and Facebook group organised by the state Liberal-National party coalition. Details: www.marywooldridge.com
