Driver jailed for six years

25 May, 2009 10:22 AM
AN Oakleigh woman who killed two friends and injured three others in a drunken high-speed crash has been jailed.

Maria Makridakis, 26, was ordered to serve a minimum of six years after pleading guilty to two counts of culpable driving causing the deaths of Noble Park residents Lirijeta Sulemani, 18, and Channelle Metcalfe, 22. She also pleaded guilty to two counts of negligent driving causing serious injury.

The court heard earlier this week how Makridakis, then 23, reached speeds of up to 180kmh driving on Dandenong Road on September 21, 2006. She lost control of the car, which flipped over and crashed into a tree in Caulfield.
