Councils to follow Monash's smoking ban lead

31 Mar, 2008 09:37 AM
A GROUP of councils is looking to replicate Monash Council's ban on smoking in playgrounds.

Last July, the council became the first municipality to introduce a playground smoking ban.

This month, 10 Victorian councils, including Melbourne, Geelong, Bayside, Warrnambool and Yarra Ranges, are lobbying the State Government to extend the ban to playgrounds and other outdoor areas such as shopping strips.

Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris, who instigated the ban in 2006, said he was pleased by an apparent "change of approach" from other councils.

"When I proposed this new local law, I was disappointed that Monash did not receive the support I had hoped for from other municipal councils," Cr Klisaris said.

"I am pleased that there now appears to be a change of approach and that other councils are now choosing to follow Monash's lead."

He said the ban had been a success.

"Since the new smoking ban came into force, the council has received no complaints of non-compliance nor has it issued fines."
