POLICE hope to make roads safer ahead of winter with a traffic operation targeting non-roadworthy cars.
Oakleigh Police will hold a 24 hour blitz on Monday that concentrates on cars that aren't safe to be driven.
Acting Sergeant John Auchterlonie said because of the cooler weather and recent spells of rain, police would hold the blitz to make sure people were safe on the road.
"Vehicles tha't arent roadworthy carry serious risks. Unsafe tyres increase risk of a traffic accident in general, but especially so during bad conditions.''
Acting Sergeant Auchterlonie said working headlights, brake lights and even properly functioning windscreen
wipers during rainy days could make the difference between life and death in a car crash.
He warned drivers not to become complacent and, as a police officer for the past 15 years, said not just a
simple car crash could occur from driving non-roadworthy cars, death could also be a result.
Police will also target speed and the use of mobile phones while driving.
He said the while the blitz was only 24 hours, there would be a series of ongoing traffic operations by police in the municipality with dates to be determined.
