Chadstone fares worst for car park crashes

CHADSTONE shopping centre was identified as the state's hot spot for car park bingles in an RACV research report released last week.

Last year, 95 RACV car insurance claims were lodged for accidents at Chadstone - more than 20 higher than any other Victorian shopping centre.

The RACV says the shopping centre, with about 7000 car spaces, attracts more accidents per parking space than any centre in Melbourne's CBD.

Chadstone manager Stephen DeWaele said the result reflected the centre's size and its traffic of 17 million customers a year.

He said the shopping centre had a responsibility to its customers and had invested heavily to provide "the safest possible environment", including car park attendants, a car park shuttle service and additional closed-circuit TV.

Also in the top 20 bingle zones was The Glen shopping centre, ranked seventh with 53 claims.

As a suburb, Glen Waverley was ranked fourth in the state for bingle locations with 196 last year, compared to number one-ranked Melbourne's 467, Clayton's 127 and Chadstone's 182.

RACV personal insurance manager Philip James said 15 per cent of collision claims were for car parking accidents, many for reversing into vehicles, trolleys, railings, walls and poles. He said accidents at shopping centres were more prevalent as the centres grew larger and opened longer hours.

"The centres are attracting more and more time-poor people who are increasingly frustrated by the volume of traffic, especially at peak sales times such as Christmas and stocktake events."
