RONALD McDonald House Monash hopes to bring health care to thousands of disadvantaged south eastern children with a medical centre on wheels.
RMH Monash chief executive Jennifer North told the Journal the group was in conversation with Southern Health to introduce Victoria's first Ronald McDonald Care Mobile to the south eastern suburbs.
RMH Monash will conduct a feasibility study into the care mobile. It can provide primary care, developmental screening, immunisation, asthma treatment, vision and hearing screening, speciality care such as cardiology, blood collection and social service referral to up to 75,000 children and young people each year within Southern Health's catchment area.
The van - with two patient examination rooms, pharmacy and pathology services - could visit schools, community centres, civic sites, commercial buildings, churches and special events in disadvantaged areas.
Mrs North said the child-friendly care mobile would bring health care to people who might not otherwise have access to it.
"It's a proactive approach to filling the gap between services needed and services offered in the community."
Mrs North said the program had been successful in 32 other areas worldwide.
"I know what it's like not to have access to essential services and public health is vital to the wellbeing of the community.
"People sell their houses and go into huge financial debt to help their seriously ill children, but what happens when the money runs out?"
Ronald McDonald House Charities would provide the $500,000 start-up costs for the care mobile, which could be on the road in two years.
