TRADERS in Kingsway say they are losing customers and have "grave fears" for their future because of a lack of car parking.
Glen Waverley Traders Association president Christo Christophidis said the growing precinct was placing an unprecedented demand on existing car parks. He said shops had lost business because customers were unable to find a parking spot.
"We see people circling around Kingsway who eventually give up and drive off. If we don't get more car parks, people will avoid coming here and go to major shopping centres instead."
Mr Christophidis said the group would petition the council next year for more parking spaces near the Kingsway precinct.
He said the proposed 308-space car park at Euvena Avenue and O'Sullivan Road, approved at a council meeting in August, was "too far from the action" and wouldn't benefit traders.
A new car park was urgently needed on the south side of the station, he said.
"The council need to be able to cope with the demand of business growth, but businesses won't grow any further unless we get car parks in the right areas.
"We know that projects like this can take a lot of time and if we don't get feedback from the council soon we could be waiting years."
Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris said the council consulted with traders in the early stages of the development, and there were no objections.
"It's a bit unfair for them to criticise it given that we are committed to more car parking in Glen Waverley and we have a car parking scheme that works well and will deliver more car parking in the future."
