Bikers rack up a win

31 Aug, 2009 11:43 AM
CYCLISTS will soon be able to park their bikes securely at Oakleigh railway station.

Last Friday, Oakleigh MP Ann Barker announced that a Parkiteer cage would be constructed this year at the station.

The cage, managed by Bicycle Victoria, is accessible via a swipe card for registered members and provides undercover parking for about 25 bikes.

Ms Barker said Parkiteer cages encouraged commuters to leave their cars at home and choose an active way to get to the station.

"Around 35per cent of current Parkiteer cage users have told us that prior to signing up, they drove to the station.

"These cages offer free, secure weather protection for your bike, giving commuters who combine their journey with cycling peace of mind."

Bicycle Victoria chief executive Harry Barber urged anyone interested in cycling to the station to register and said the cages would give more people the option of combining bike and train travel.

"The new bike cages are great news for the environment and great news for local public transport users. People can see it's another way to use a bike to save money and stay healthy.

"Passengers get to park first class, near the station entrance."

Oakleigh is one of 15 railway stations in Victoria to receive a new-generation bike cage this year as part of the State Government's $115million cycling strategy, which aims to encourage more Victorians to ride their bikes.
