Jake left bitter over salmon pasting

A Thai green curry may have ultimately sunk his hopes, but it was the behaviour of his teammates aboard a P&O cruise which has left a bitter taste in the mouth of MasterChef's latest victim, Jake Bujayer.

The 29-year-old cement renderer claims he was left to carry the can for the blue team's loss in Wednesday night's high-seas catering challenge, despite four of his teammates also having a hand in the salmon sashimi salad that was given the thumbs-down by cruise passengers.

The teams had had to prepare 8000 canapes for P&O holidaymakers before facing a passenger vote, with the red team roundly trouncing Bujayer's blue team 1138 votes to 762.

As punishment, the blue team had to nominate three of its members for the elimination round.

Bujayer at first refused to take part in the decision-making process before eventually putting his hand up alongside Marion and Joanne.

He now wishes he had stood up for himself.

“In hindsight I wish I had fought my argument a bit more,” Bujayer said.

“I was really disappointed about it all."

He admitted the salmon sashimi had taken too long to prepare, but said it was not fair that he was singled out by his teammates.

"I bore the brunt of the blame for the salmon, even though another four people also had a go at what I was doing, and all bar Callum walked away from it," he said.

Marion, who weeks earlier beat top Melbourne chef Frank Camorra in a celebrity chef challenge, used her immunity pin to avoid the elimination round - a tricky taste test involving a Thai green curry.

Despite cooking the dish many times, Bujayer said he "couldn't taste a thing that day" and was the first to trip up while trying to name all 23 ingredients in it.

“One stupid mistake and it was all over…I shouldn’t have been so complacent,” Bujayer said.

“I couldn’t taste a thing that day. I really wasn’t going off taste; I was going off what I thought should have been in the dish. I just didn’t have a sense of taste on the day."

Nevertheless, he said he didn't blame Marion for saving her own skin.

"Marion would’ve been mad not to use her immunity,” he said later.

"I was gutted when I was told I was eliminated. I definitely had more to show – I had only just got off crutches.”

The NSW tradesman, who had planned to open his own beach seafood stand, has since been dealt a fresh blow.

“The council have knocked me back at the moment, but one day I’ll get there and I definitely have plans to get into the industry," he said.
